What is a serum? And how is it different than a face lotion?

In an article onElle.com, dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum explains that “a serum is usually a liquid or gel containing high concentrations of skin actives, which are able to penetrate deeper than other topicals [like moisturizers] with content occlusives that prevent deeper penetration.”

AWebMD article says that serums are made of very small molecules, so the skin absorbs them quickly and deeply. A face lotion may also be chock-full of skin-loving ingredients, but its heavier formula means that it’s more suited to locking in moisture than delivering a super dose of active ingredients. In the same WebMD article, Ni’Kita Wilson, a cosmetic chemist in New Jersey says, “Without these hindrances, the active ingredients in a serum penetrate your skin faster and more effectively [than a face lotion]."

And how do I use it?

Generally, you should use a serum all over your face and neck twice daily, once in the morning and then again in the evening. Apply it before your moisturizer if you want to get the most bang for your buck, according to Dr. Angela J. Lamb, a board-certified dermatologist and associate professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai's department of dermatology, in an article onToday.com.
